CHURCH PLOTS EMBARRASSMENT OF GOVERNOR
The Church Committee Chairman of Qua Iboe Church, Oku located along Ikot Ekpene road Elder Onofiok Etang have together with some Elders and officers of the Church perfected plans to embarrass the State Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel by instigating fresh crisis in the Church.
In an emergency Church Committee meeting held at the Church premises yesterday, Etang is said to have announced that the Court case notwithstanding that the Church in Oku will take its position as a faction of 1887.
This position did not go down well with majority of members of the Church Committee who argued reminding the Chairman that the matter about the name adoption is in court and it is instructive that the case be decided before the Church takes a stand.
The Church Committee meeting became rowdy thereby forcing a breakdown of rule and order in the Church yard.
An Elder is said to have mentioned to Elder Etang that making an announcement linking the Oku Church to 1887 will not only provoke members in the Church today, but will also embarrass the Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel who has earlier intervened in the matter and had asked that the Church remain neutral while a reconciliation is being pursued.
The Church Committee Chairman Etang who was visibly angry flared up and asked, “Who is the Governor, does he think Church administration is Banking?, we are not interested in how the Governor will feel, I have said it and the Secretary Sylvester Edem will announce that in Church during Service tomorrow” (today).
Many persons who attended the meeting are alleged to have opposed the uncomplimentary swipe taken at the Governor by Etang causing more wagging of tongues in the Church Committee.
Some attendees at the meeting openly threatened to face the Church Committee Chairman in the event such announcement is made.
It could be recalled that in the wake of the name adoption involving United Evangelical Church and Qua Iboe Church, some members of the Church had approached the Court for the interpretation and the way forward whether the Oku branch Church should belong to either side or stay neutral till a reconciliation of both divides have been reached.
The Court had earlier warned and the Church agreed to remain neutral till the legal authorities decide. But in recent times, members of the Oku branch Church have known no peace following what they described as the sneaky and wicked ides of Etang who is leading the Church to inglorious paths.
When our reporter contacted Etang, the Church Chairman confirmed the meeting it had yesterday and said, we of 1887 needed to play them a fast one. He said, he is pleased he has the backing of some authorities like the Secretary and Vice Chairman of the Church Committee.
On the remarks against the Governor he responded in the affirmative and added that the Governor is only a Visitor to the Church and not a regular member. And therefore should have no say in matters relating to the Church. He however extended an invitation to this reporter so as to cover and report the decision that will be announced by the Church Secretary. He said, di ke mkpo idogo, when this reporter expressed fear of a possible break out of fight.
At the moment, there is heavy tension in the Church as members are arriving for Church Service discussing with hush tones as a break up of fight looks 90percent.
