Is Church Wedding Compulsory For A Believer?

By Idy James

INTRODUCTION:

Marrriage is an institution created by God from creation: It was instituted for procreation.

Old Testament

According to Scripture, God instituted marriage as the pinnacle of creation. On the sixth day, in the first creation story, the Book of Genesis tells us: “God created man in his image; in the divine image he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them, saying: ‘Be fertile and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it’” (Genesis 1: 27-28).

In the second creation story, God says that “it is not good for man to be alone. I will make a suitable partner for him.” (Genesis 2:18). This suitable helpmate was formed from the very rib of man and thus woman was “flesh of his flesh” (Genesis 2:22-23).

Woman, then, is man’s equal in dignity and the one closest to his heart. Because man and woman were created for one another, “a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one flesh” (Genesis 2: 24). Scripture teaches that marriage is not a mere human institution, but something God established from the foundation of world.

New Testament

Christians are new creations in Christ, healed of sin and its effects. Marriage is also recreated and made new in Christ. Jesus tells us that in the Kingdom of God the permanent union of husband and wife that God originally intended can once more be realized (see Matthew 19:6-11). By the grace of the Holy Spirit, husbands and wives can now truly love and honor one another. St. Paul tells us that marriage bears witness to the indissoluble love of Christ for his Church. Thus, husbands should love their wives.

EARLY MARRIAGES:

Marriage in ancient times had very little to do with romance. In fact, it was more of a family arrangement or an agreement. There were stipulations, conditions and a bridal price. Couples were arranged to be married in early youth. Most marriages were agreements within the tribe or village or at most close neighboring clans.

The parents (mostly the father) arranged the marriage. The bride offered her opinion, but it did not carry much weight.

The new couple usually did not start a new home or build a house for themselves but occupied a space in the groom’s family house. Because the bride was seen a gain to the groom and his family, it was expected, therefore, that the father of the groom should pay the father of the bride the equivalent of her value as a useful member of the family. This is origin of THE BRIDE PRICE, a compensation for the value of the BRIDE.

Until the Middle Ages, a marriage consisted of two ceremonies that were marked by two separate celebrations, with an interval between. First, the betrothal (introduction and engagement) and later, the wedding. At the betrothal the couple was legally married, although the bride still remained in her father’s house. She could not belong to another man unless she was divorced from her betrothed. The wedding meant only that the betrothed woman, accompanied by a festive procession, was escorted from her parent’s house to the house of her groom, and the relationship was consummated after fulfilling all the conditions agreed by the family of the Bride(all these were purely determined by the family and culture).

When we look at the Birth story of Jesus in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, this was the cultural situation being described.

But within all of this, marriage remained a family endeavor. Marriages were held at the groom’s home or the bride’s home, depending on who could host the celebration and also what the culture permits.

ORIGIN OF CHURCH WEDDING

It would still be many centuries before we begin seeing ceremonies in synagogues. The eventual move towards having the ceremony in the synagogue was to avoid the potential awkwardness of a home not being able to host a ceremony. IT WAS PURELY FOR CONVENIENCE, NOT IN OBEDIENCE TO ANY SCRIPTURES.

Christian church involvement in marriage also developed over time.

While Jesus, Paul and other New Testament writers speak about marriage and instruct husbands and wives on how to conduct themselves in marriage, there is no biblical tradition that ties weddings to a church ceremony. Marriage was still a family issue, not an institution. It was private and communal.

CHURCH WEDDING IS MAN-MADE DOCTRINE:

It is important to know that for any practice to become a doctrine or a practice, such practice or subject must run through the Bible in this manner: that subject must be seen in Genesis as a seed; in the law as types and shadows; in the prophets as their prophecy; in the book of Psalms as the songs of David; in the four gospels as the teachings or the parables of Jesus; in the book of Acts as a pattern; in the epistles as a doctrine that is Taught. Therefore, if that practice does not exist through this process it cannot be a doctrine or a practice.

Any practice that does not run through the above Process is not a DOCTRINE. The role of the Church in such is purely ADVISORY.

THE LOVE OF GOD IS NOT MEASURED IN HOW SUCCESSFUL OR HOW BAD YOUR MARRRIAGE IS. It is in WHAT CHRIST HAS DONE.

TO MAKE CHURCH WEDDING A QUALIFICATION FOR ELECTION, ORDINATION AND PROMOTION IN CHURCH IS PURELY A MAN -MADE INNOVATION IN CHRISTIANITY.

YOU ARE MARRIED ONCE YOU SATISFY THE BRIDE’S FAMILY. EVEN IF YOU MARRY ON HIRE PURCHASE, THE CHURCH HAS NO BUSINESS IN IT.

HAVING A CHURCH WEDDING IS PURELY YOUR PREROGATIVE. IT HAS NO SPIRITUAL VALUE AND DOESN’T MAKE YOU BETTER, IN GOD’S SIGHT THAN ANOTHER.
