Casual Health staffers in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have appealed to Akwa Ibom Government to take steps to ratify their employment so as to give them a sense of belonging.

According to the medical workers, such gesture by Government will go a long way in ameliorating their sufferings borne for some time now.

The employees, who spoke in different health facilities in Etinan, lamented the somewhat abandonment of their contributions to the advancement of the health sector in the State by the Government.

A staff of Primary Health Centre, Ndon Utim, who spoke recently with newsmen in the area, called on the Akwa Ibom Government to remember them and change their story.

The temporary health employee, who gave her name as Ntiense noted that she has been a casual staff since 2008 and appealed to the Government to consider her and others, in the ongoing health sector recruitment in the State.

Ntiense said she has got the necessary professional qualification in her over 12 years in the field and have acquired more than an average experience.

The help seeking health personnel went further to highlight her ordeals in the health facility saying, “We are only four personnel in this facility and the workload is enormous for us”

On the issue of welfare, she said since her partial employment in 2008, welfare is so poor revealing that a number of health sector employment had taken place but that they have not been looked at.

The health staff also noted that there are uncountable numbers of health staff on such status in the State, who have no chance to make their voices heard, urging the Akwa Ibom Government to look to their direction.

Another casual health staff, who spoke in Ikot Mfon community, pleaded with the state government to complete her employment.

The employee, who gave her name as Enoeno, narrated that 65 percent of the job is done by them adding that to whom much is given, much is expected also.

Enoeno urged the government or the relevant government department to take their deplorable situation serious by regularizing the employment of all casual health staff in the State.

“We really hoped that subsequent employment of health workers by Akwa Ibom Government would cover us”, Enoeno lamented.

She, however, pleaded with the State Government, relevant government agencies and the Etinan Local Government Authority to come to their aid.

A native of the community who preferred anonymity said the state of health facility in their community is critical.

He noted that out of the two staffers in the facility, the professional health staff comes to work by 12pm and close by 2pm, adding that during health emergencies, the community is always rendered helpless.

Another native who did not want her name mentioned, decried the state of Ikot Mfon Health Post, saying that as a fact, between the two staffers in the Health Post, only one has the professional acumen to manage health related issue.

She, however, called on the relevant agencies to do the needful in the area of employment of health staff.

The team’s visit to Mbioto II, Ekpene Ukpa, Efa, Nkana Iman, Iwo Etor, Ikot Akpan Ntembom and Ikot Ekpaw in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area yielded no different results.

Respondents, who spoke with the team lamented poor welfare and permanent employment.

They separately called on the relevant department to see to their plights.

Further investigations revealed that several of these casual employees have done more than 10 years without having their appointment confirmed.

Investigations also showed there are a number of such employees at the Etinan Local Government Secretariat whose well-being hangs in a balance.
