...Convenes townhall meeting to curb insecurity, illegal structures

As Governor Udom Emmanuel continues to reposition Akwa Ibom State into an enviable position as the cleanest state in Nigeria, stakeholders in Eket have vowed to ensure that Eket emerges the cleanest local government in the state.

They have also vowed to partner actively with the local government chairman to bring an end to illegal structures and pockets of insecurity that could hamper the growth of the area.

Addressing a cross section of stakeholders, including elders, village heads, village youth presidents, village council chairmen, women leaders, among others, the council boss whose development strides less than three months in office has continued to attract positive commendations from within and outside the area, said he desired to see the oil city taking the lead as cleanest local government area in the state.

The town hall meeting convened, Tuesday at the council secretariat, saw the council boss announcing that a committee would be set up to go round villages in Eket to monitor and appraise the level of cleanliness in all the villages in the area.

He also registered his displeasure over the erection of illegal structures in Eket and advised the people on the need to protect public infrastructure against vandalism.

Reacting to some security concerns raised at the meeting, the Chairman enjoined youths and community leaders to be vigilant and always monitor the activities of strangers in their neighbourhood.

“We want to make Eket clean and beautiful. I want see things bring done orderly in Eket. We must protect these roads and other infrastructure provided by the government. It is in our hands to make sure we protect these public infrastructures”

He said it was difficult for roads rehabilitations on some roads because landlords had built up to gutters and walkways, discouraging development from such places.

In support of the Chairman’s resolve to keep Eket clean and beautiful, Chief Essien, a former Minister of Lands and Housing and former federal lawmaker announced a donation of N600,000 cash prize for the villages that would emerge the cleanest in the first, second and third category for the month of March, 2021.
