Be Advocates Of Peace, Development – Akwa Ibom Special Duties Boss Tells Upenekang Youth

0

Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties, Rt. Hon. Okpolupm Etteh, has urged youth of his community to be patriotic advocates of peace, unity, progress and development.

The Commissioner made this known on Tuesday at his country home in Upenekang, Ibeno Local Government Area, when the newly inaugurated executive of the Upenekang Youth Association paid him a courtesy call.

Rt. Hon. Etteh admonished members of the Association to concern themselves with what they can do to add value to the area, respect constituted authorities, be law abiding and do well to write their names in gold for posterity.

“The future of Upenekang is in your hands. The elders have done their bits by laying solid foundations. It is now left for you, the younger generation, to build on those foundations. You must protect the area and strive for things that will promote peace, unity and harmony. You must be prayerful, set your agenda right and do not allow anything to derail you from succeeding. You must make your two-year tenure count,” he said.

While appreciating the youth for the visit, the Commissioner advised them to “have a functional database of the youth of the area for a proper utilisation of same. And consciously take active part in the forthcoming Continuous Registration of Voters (CRV), as scheduled by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).”

He further assured the youth of his continuous support in all their programmes and activities.

In his opening remarks, the President of the Association, Mr. Martins Asukpa, who said the 12-member executive came to share its vision and challenges with the Commissioner, expressed appreciation to him for the warm reception given to them.

Mr. Asukpa promised to lead the Association and youth of the area through the positive paths of their elders and forebears, assuring that they will not engage in social vices nor bring shame to the area and its leaders.

He presented the Association’s programme of activities to the Commissioner and subsequently appealed for support and partnership for the good, progress and betterment of Ibeno.

The President hinted that his administration has set up a 22-man Monitoring Team to help drive the Association’s vision and projects including “getting the youth to be gainfully engaged through inter-school competitions and skill acquisitions.”

Present at the visit were the Ward-1 Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Elder Sam Sam David, and Councillor resenting Ward-1 in Ibeno Legislative Council, Hon. Sam William Usen.
