Akwa Ibom State Commences Verification Of Dredging Sites

The government of Akwa Ibom State through the Ministry of Environment has started verification of dredging sites across the state.

 

The state Commissioner for Environment, Sir Charles Udoh disclosed this yesterday at a government function while fielding questions from newsmen.

 

He said the exercise is to ensure all dredgers operate according to the stipulated guidelines as set up by the state government

 

He further stated that the verification exercise became necessary in order to stop further destruction of critical infrastructure of government and make the environment safe for all.

 

According to the commissioner placement of signage with the inscription

‘No dredging’ is ongoing across the state and anyone dredging at unapproved site will be arrested and prosecuted

 

Sir Udoh said that sand will also be sold at government approved sites across the state and any truck found with sand from non-approved sites will be arrested and prosecuted.

It would be recalled that the Ministry of Environment recently developed a new checklist for sand dredging, borrow pit and gravel mining activities and later set up a special Monitoring Team to checkmate illegal dredging operations in the state.
